DJ Sneaks #5 Franky Redente

Time for another DJ Sneaks mix i think. And who better to step up than our good friend Franky Redente.

Franky's Mix.
We posted Franky's previous mix early last month and mentioned he's been busy in the studio cave recently. Well it seems he has very been busy, with more original tracks in the pipeline as well as this most recent mix on the download at the bottom of the post containing a number of Franky Re edits to keep things rolling. Serious props going out to him for this mix, opening up in a typically smooth Franky Redente style and splicing continuously between silky house numbers and tasty Chicago jacked kicks.

Photobucket

Franky's Sneaks.
Turns out Franky is a true Nike Dunk lover (about time we had some serious foot ware on here) and has been a dunk lover since first seeing Michael Jordan in the original Air Jordan 1s (designed by Peter Moore for Nike in 1985) as wee lad back in Italy in 1989.

"As a kid I thought that waring a pair would actually make me fly like Jordan"

The dunk as we still know it today was a "Design improvement" on the original Jordan's and was also introduced in 1985 in a number of US college basketball team colours. Available in both hi top and low the dunk was specifically designed for the basketball court with a lower and lighter outer sole.

Franky mentions that in Napoli, close to where he grew up it was really difficult to get hold of them at the time and all imports were in to big a size so his persistent nagging for a pair almost drove his Dad insane and his obsession with the dunk has stuck with him.

"The best thing about the shoe is that they are straight up basic, pure 1980s designs. Simple is genius they say and they carry so much history with them".

Photobucket

Franky's pair in the pic above are his own Nike ID Dunk Low design keeping things nice and simple on the colour scheme and as he states "signed with his nickname just in case he forgets it".

Make sure you check out and download Franky Redente's March mix on the below Soundcloud player. Also, check out this link ( http://www.nike.com/jumpman23/historyofflight/ ) sent through by Franky with his mix. One of the coolest looking web pages I've seen in a while that takes you through the whole Air Jordan history in a simple and effective way.

Introducing James Creed & Dickon Stone

Been a few days since our last post probably due to the exhaustion induced by our last ever Superfilth party. We waved good bye to our four years strong party in style. Huge love to all the DJs who came down and played on the night and to all the people who have been involved over the past 4 years. We'd also like to shout out a massive thanks to every one who came down and partied with us as well, without you it would have never of been. Superfilth will be missed.

Sooo, thought we'd kick of this weeks posts with a mix sent to me last night by writer,Jackmode team member and all round top geez Dickon Stone. The mix is an introducing mix by the man Dickon himself and Producer James Creed and has been put together in celebration of Jame's debut remix release on Klasse Recordings. James' remix of Johanna Knutsson's "HEAVY BABY" (klasse 004) is out now, a superb Ep that is a straight in the bag cert on all tracks for me including a superb remix from Klasse label boss Luca Lozano.

Photobucket

Check out the Sound Cloud stream of all the Ep tracks below. Dickon and James both Berlin based may come as fresh faces on the scene to some but this does not come across in the mix or on James's production. Catch them on the ones and twos over the coming months in Berlin (April 13th @ Suicide Circus, Berlin w/ Pol_On and April 15th @ Ritter Butzke, Berlin w/ RTK, Oliver $, Renaissance Man, Umami ) and Munich (May 6th @ Crux, Munich w/ Teki Latex, Chris James).

You can also catch James Creed at the London Jackmode party on the 23rd of April along side The Martin Brothers, Nat Self, Mr Ho and more. There is also upcoming releases to from James expected on Klasse recordings later in the year. Definitely one to watch.

KLS004 - Johanna Knutsson - Heavy Baby EP - Snippets - Releasedate: 29.03.11 by Klasse Recordings

Dickon and James Creed's introducing mix is also a cert for the pocket player. They've put together a smooth full on deep down percussive riot for your ears. Get on the down load below and check out the track listing for referencing all its inner gems.

Hesseltime Gottwood

Good Afternoon Monday readers!

I am in an exceptionally good mood today due to the simple fact the hearing has returned in my left ear. 2 weeks with nothing but a dull low end drone getting through to my ear drum seriously freaked me out and its return has made me even more appreciative of listening to good noise as well as the fact that you should really protect those lug'oles when hanging out near loud speakers.

Anyway, on to today's mix feature with a tidy little selection mixed to perfection by Trouble Vision's very own Hesseltime for the most recent mix release in the Gottwood festival podcast series. Filled with a number of tracks i am really feeling at the moment this mix has left me feeling seriously fresh and sums up what i think this summer season will be all about. We highly recommend you crack this on the player and give it a whirl in preparation of an epic festival season.

Photobucket

Hesseltime aka Matt Hesselworth has aswered a few quick fire questions below to try and help us understand the thought that went in to this superb selection as well as the the inner man behind the mixing booth. He has also answered a few more complex questions for the guys at Gottwood so check those out as well on the link here.

O - What is your breakfast snack of choice?

H- coconut master crumble. it is incredible. You can only get it in Germany though so if you go over, do the smart thing and stock up.

O - If you could have any famous person from history compile a mix tape for you who would it be?

H - Urm, I suppose DJ Derek, he's old enough right?

O - He is indeed old and very humble....Which of the Martin Brothers would you prefer to take on in a game of ping pong and why?

H - Justin Martin, for his work on buzzin fly. Not sure how that would affect his ping-pong skills though? I reckon I could smash him at squash.

O - Most looked forward to party of 2011?

H- Its going to have to be my new night at Corsica studios. Its called 'tief' and launches in September. Its going to focus on the deeper side of house, techno and disco.. Line ups are looking really exciting.

O - What fruit would most appropriately describe your mixing style?

H - What fruit? A banana because its smooth from beginning to end.
I don't know, what do you want me to say?

O - Nice, although i would have chosen a water melon...... And your Hot tip producer for 2011?

H - Bicep is putting out some amazing tracks. Definitely going to be big. We got him playing the first tief at corsica studios.

O- And finally....The most influential tune of the past 6 months?

H - Most influential tune.. got to be that Stimming remix of Moses. The production is incredible.. it sounds so good through a big system.

Massive big ups to Hesseltime and make sure you get a listen to the below mix!

A Caspar Williamson Pick Me Up

Something a little different this afternoon with a wee plug for my man C-dog Williamson (Caspar Williamson in the real word).

Caspar is a designer, printmaker, art director and author based in London, UK, who has been going from strength to strength over the past few years since graduating in Illustration at Camberwell College of art back in 2007.

Having also established his design studio Flyingmachines in 2007, Caspar has had the pleasure of exhibiting his screenprinted work alongside such prolific artist as Shepard Fairey, Airside, D*face, Pure Evil and Eine amongst others.

His work has also been featured in leading design publication Creative Review and Elle Décor, as well as being published by London design studio’s Nobrow Press, for which he received a D&AD awards listing in 2010.

Casper will be exhibiting his exclusive new print entitled Eight Pawns (pictured below) for the contemporary art and design fair Pick Me Up from the 17th to the 27th March. The show is at London's Somerset house, a venue definitely worth checking out and tickets are available for a measly fiver here. There will also be a program of events and activities accompanying the fair including an open studio from the artist Anthony Burrill. Check out the Sommerset House site for more details

<span class=

Caspar's limited edition print will be an edition of only twenty, A1 size printed in three colours on Fedrogini 285gsm paper stock and available for your own wall at just £100 a pop.

Round Table Knights - Winter-Spring 2011 Mix

The latest Round Table Knights mix tape is something i always look forward too. Guaranteed to be full of quality tracks which in every case either leaves me thinking why i don't play that track in my sets and if i don't know the tune already leaves me stuck on beatport and phonicarecords.com for the next 24 hours.

Photobucket

As well as being two of the nicest dudes around, the Swiss duo are also some of my favorite DJs to hear play out. They have exploded over the past two years since we first had the pleasure of meeting and seeing the guys play as secret guests at one of the early DeadFish Family and Friends parties.

Their DJ sets consist of subtle house gems, consistently keeping the groove rolling and slipping the occasional RTK original or remix in to tease the crowd in to a frenzy.

Their latest mix tape effort "Winter_Spring 2011 Mix" uploaded just this morning is no let down and shows they are definitely on a Swiss roll (sorry had to use it). Smooth as f**k basically. This one will be on repeat on my generic Mp3 player in the build up to the Summer months from this point on.

Catch the Round Table Knights at Snap Crackle and Pops 4th Birthday party at East Village, London this Friday. They will also be joining us on the line up at Gottwood Festival at the end of June so make sure you get your tickets in now and check out the mix on Mixcloud below.

Garms with no Arms #2 - Grizzly

Another Garms with no arms post today. Not in any attempt at blagging a freebie this time as my T is already pressed, folded and sitting in my wardrobe ready for Sunday best paid for with my own cold hard earned cash. This is simply to try and force everyone out there to hold back from spending their dollar in Urban Outfitters and hook yer selves up with a gleaming new shirt repping some of the tasty labels and artists out there right now.

Hopefully you have all heard of Sindens new (ish) label Grizzly which has had a stream of succulent releases on digital and 12" from artists including Sbtrkt, Mel
é, Brodinski and Sinden himself since its launch back in in May 2010.

As well as the fly T on the left, available to purchase here (For a bargain price of £15) Grizzly has teamed up with Tom Lea's label Local Action Records to give away an Ep by Grizzly's Mele and Local Action's Contakt featuring remixes of each others respective tracks (Trappin by Melé - Contakt remix) (Rhodophyta by Contakt - Melé remix).

Anyway, enough of this jibber jabber, get on over to Sinden's blog page here for a free download of both tracks and check out the mix below by Local Action boss Tom Lea which was put together as part of the DJ mag podcast series a few months back.

Look out for more quality releases on both labels including
Paul Woolford’s remix of T. Williams’ anthemic ‘Heartbeat’ on Local Action (out soon) and Melé's "Mugged" on Grizzly out now.

DJ Sneaks #4 Sambalanco

The DJ Sneaks series continues today with a mix and kicks chat from Samabalanco, (Well one of the Sambalanco crew at least)

The Sambalanco parties kicked off in 2004 as a session aimed at bringing people together and to push some pretty hefty music forward in the process and they have been running hard ever since.

The Sambalanco Crew is made up of Dave Blackgrove (from Coda Agency), Matt Riley (from Hospital Records), and Si Tubby (the chief of Graphics at Surrey County Council). Who together obviously know very well how to throw a good party, pick a good line up and create some seriously clean and precise flyers in the process.

We had a quick chat with Mr Dave Blackgrove to check out his fine pair of kicks as well as Sambalanco's latest mix effort which we have available on the D-L below.

O - "Tell us a touch about Sambalanco's music policy"

Dave - "We started on a very Jazz / Broken / Afro-Latin slant but Disco & House have always been and remain as the backbone. These days it’s more Disco, Bass & Dub, often with a hefty afro/tropical sound to keep it a bit more tribal".

Sambalanco has always been legendary in my eyes as its early efforts in Camberwell meant that at the time in the dry and desolate "Legal" music venue selection that Camberwell had to offer there was always the occasional gem of a party put on by the Sambalanco guys which in no doubt added towards the demise of my university efforts.

Until a few months back Sambalanco had been holding regular ramm out parties at the Brixton venue The Rest Is Noise adding another element to Brixton's recent comeback but with The Rest Is Noise's recent sell out for development opportunities it seems the guys have had to take things East for a bit with their last shin dig being at Great Eastern Street's East Village.

Dave - The Rest Is Noise was packed on a monthly basis but the lease holder wanted to use it for a shop so allas, it closed in Feb and we’re holding tight, planning our next attack!

O - Anything planned for South London in the future?

Dave -We will be starting a new south London session to keep true to our roots soon, but there's nothing locked down as yet.

Dave's Kicks- A very classic looking pair of Rebok pumps with a simple but efective colour scheme. The Rebok Pumps first hit the courts in 1989 and was initially designed as a basketball high top but was later released in a number of tennis and track orientated styles. The shoe quickly became a court status symbol due to the higher cost of the trainer compared to basic sneaks and the fact that the tongues pump element didnt really have any effect at all.

Photobucket

Dave -"Never had actual Reebok pumps before so I chose the classic model in the classic green on white as a little nod to my old Dunlop Greenflash that died.
I used the Pump to do them up for at least two weeks until my thumbs hurt and I realized the pump doesn’t really help you out and that pumping each shoe takes half a day."

Check out Daves Sambalanco "3 pound Disco" mix put together originally for their epic 2010-2011 NYE party. Starting things at a smooth 120 tempo and moving all the way through to the bass filled end of the leg shaking spectrum.
Make sure you all get down to the next Sambalanco session. Details for all upcoming Sambalanco parties can be found on the FaceBook group
here .

DJ Sneaks #3 Cosmin TRG

Edition number 3 in the DJ Sneaks series today from Romanian producer Cosmin TRG aka Cosmin Nicolae.

Anyone lucky enough to have caught Cosmin at Trouble Vision's Simple Records party last Saturday will know what a set this guy lays down. With things definitely moving within a more housey mood set in this mix, Cosmin is certainly a master of many styles with roots in drum and bass as well as previously being know as straight up "TRG" releasing a much more garage and 2 step orientated sound. His detail and quality of production has certainly moved forward with him and he has definitely become one of the most rated producers in a long time in our eyes and i know a lot of people who will most certainly agree.

We had a chat and a few frat cups of rum with Cosmin after his set at Trouble Vision to find out a bit about his current kicks. He has also been kind enough to hook us up with his most recent mix laid down for the Netherlands based DJ Broadcast podcast.

Cosmin's Kicks-
Photobucket

A pair of Clae Khan Caramel here, which i think you'll agree are a true classic looking pair of high tops. A lesser known but definitely high quality brand, which in
2003 was given the Sportswear International Award for the best men's shoe line (fact). Clean designs with the shoe supposedly being designed with comfort in mind as equally as the style element with the option of removing the ankle strap for more ankle freedom availible when required.
Cosmin picked these up in Size? Carnaby street on one of his visits to London. Cosmin says he is a big fan of high tops as well as the colour scheme here being pretty special. We definitely agree with the caramel.

DJ Sneaks #2 Arrowstothesky

Straight into number 2 in the DJ Sneaks series today with an exceptional mix from our long time buddy and fellow Superfilth resident Arrowstothesky.

With the recent announcement of the Superfilth closing party this mix (The Oonst is coming Mix Tape) is a fitting send off to 4 crazy good years of Superfilth but more so to celebrate the next forward thinking steps and the birth of Oonst. But more to come on that soon.

Some massive tracks in this one including two remixes by the Arrowstothesky man himself. An exceptional unofficial remix of the recent Round Table Knights single "Say What!?" as well as his remix of "Un Vingt" by Throwing Snow. Both massive tracks in their original form and on a very equal level in their Arrowstothesky reworking.

And being the lovely chap Arrowstothesky is, he has also provided us with a free download of both tracks.

Arrowstothesky's kicks- A nice bit of subtle style here with a leather sneaker touching on the realms of formal shoe. Also a good bit of individuality with this pair, known only as "Fake Mids" (Fake being the brand name) and them seeming to be pretty rare? Don't know a lot about these myself but as you can imagine researching the brand name "Fake Shoes" online has come up with very little related info.

<span class=

Mr Arrowstothesky picked these up in Kracow Poland a few weeks back. They are real leather upper with a nice mid cut and he quotes that they are "very comfortable indeed" as you can probably tell from his nimble foot poses. At a cost of 70 Zlotych (about £15) these are definitely a sneaker purchase win.

DJ Sneaks #1

This is the first in a series of mixes we want to keep rolling on here as regular as possible.
"DJ Sneaks" will feature mixes from some of our favorite DJs as well as a bit about their kicks of the moment. Why? Because i like Kicks and i like mixes.

To open up the series we have a fresh mix from Playdoh resident and writer DJ Huakai. As expected from Huakai this mix is an exceptionally tight well though out selection with a number of subtle gems in there. Perfect warming vibes to get you in the mood for a Friday night.

<span class=

Huakai's Kicks - A nice pair of semi well worn but well looked after Adidas Forum OT-Tech mids here (excuse the grimy 93 feet East back room floorage as the back drop).

The original Forums, one of Adidas's most popular basketball shoes were first released in 1984 and were apparently Adidas's first shoe to be produced in a high , low and mid version. Check out C.L. Smooth on the sleeve of "They Reminisce Over You" for their Hip Hop credentials.

This version The OT-Tech were part of the Adidas originals collection and were released in late Summer 2010 and purchased by Mr Huakai in one of the London Size? stores. Inspired by the classic saw-tooth three stripes, these kicks are pretty smooth. Liking the colour scheme too although Huakai says he's not sure he'll go for a cream or white sneaker again due to the state of club floors in London these days. He also states that although he's more of an Air Max kind of guy he will always be a big fan of all Adidas high tops for their durability and classic looks. This pair get an 8 out of 10 from him.

Any way. Make sure you get a listen to his latest mix effort on the Soundcloud player below, definitely worth the download as well. I've also cracked in the video to Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth's "They Reminisce Over You" below as i've just remembered what a massive tune it is. Another one that's got me wishing summer would hurry up again.

Lorcan Mak Remix for the DL

Lorcan Mak. Somewhat of a legend in our circles. On his occasional trips over to blighty from his beloved Green Isle he has always managed to bring the party spirit with him...... Meaning the club night always spills over into the next day and beyond and generally results in at least a stinking hangover and little recolection of the previous 48 hours and the occasional missed flight.

Photobucket

Lorcan, currently based in his home city of Dublin has been working pretty hard of late with the up start of his new label
Stay Hungry Records. Using it as a platform to push to the masses the flourishing underground and forward thinking house scene Dublin has to offer. Look out for new releases from Lorcan and Friends coming soon on Stay Hungry.

Lorcan has also sent us a wee little exclusive freebie download in the form of a cheeky unreleased remix of "Judas" by Mom & Dad. Standard Lorcan style of ridiculously full bodied kicks and an erie synth line underneath to keep the 4 am dance floors rolling.

Three mixes for you today. Two for your ears and one for your kitchen.
I love it when i find or get sent a quality mix. I know instantly that any movement on public transport for the next 48 hours will be drastically improved. Working also becomes a
smoother operation as well as i can immerse myself within the confinement of my ear cans for at least another 40 minutes of quality noise. The 3rd mix is there because i think everyone should know the basis of a good Victoria sponge but we'll come to that in a bit.

HOLY COW!
First up is this tidy little selection from newcomers Holy Cow. A collaboration between our good pal Shane McNamara and his other (DJ) half George Watts. These guys have been working hard on their own material over the past few months with their track "Riding the 909" featuring in the mix as well a few freebie downloads also available at their Soundcloud here.
Quality selecting going on in this one, make sure you cop an earful .

Second up is this superb mix i stumbled across this morning from Hannah Hammond. I really don't know to much about her yet but with a quality mix like this one hopefully we'll be hearing a lot more from her in the future. A fine selection of Detroit and New York tinged House gems with tracks from Todd Terry, Masters at Work, DJ Sneak and many many more. Definitely a set we'll be checking out at Gottwood and Farr Festival this summer where i believe she is also on the bill.

And Finally..... The Cake Mix

<span class=

Just thought we should add the odd bit of variation to the mixes we post and there's nothing nicer than a nice slice of Victoria sponge.
Massive big ups to Lesley Waters at the BBC who doesn't yet know I've ripped her method of cake creation.

Ingredients

· knob of butter melted

· 225g/8oz butter, softened

· 225g/8oz caster sugar

· 4 large free-range eggs

· 225g/8oz self-rising flour, sifted (you may need a bit extra)

· 6 tbsp good-quality strawberry jam

· 300ml/10½ fl oz double cream, lightly whipped

· icing sugar, for dusting

Preparation method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.
  2. Gently heat the knob of butter in a pan and brush two 6in-7in/15cm-17.5cm cake tins with the melted butter. Line the bottom of the two cake tins with a circle of greaseproof paper.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy, using an electric whisk or a wooden spoon. Beat well to get lots of air into the mixture (this should take a couple of minutes).
  1. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Add a tablespoon of flour if the mixture curdles.
  2. Fold in the flour using a large metal spoon. Be careful not to over-mix it.
  3. Pour the mixture equally between the two cake tins and level off the top with a spatula. Make a slight dip in the centre with the tip of the spatula if you don't want them to be pointed in the middle.
  4. Place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the cakes spring back when pressed gently with a finger and are pale golden in colour.
  5. Remove from the oven and take them out of the tins after about 5-10 minutes. Place them on a wire rack to cool completely (for about half an hour).
  6. Spread the sponge with the jam and the whipped cream, then carefully sandwich together.
  7. Dust with icing sugar and serve.
